A Method to improve the level of naturalness in university students' translations from Turkish to English by making them aware of the English texttypes through reading sample texts in English as a pre-translation activity

Abstract

This research was designed to investigate if the exposal of the university students to the sample reading texts of a certain text-type in the target language will create a kind of text-type awareness on the students and they will create more natural translations in TL appropriate to their typical examples in that text- type in the target language. The research was carried out at the English Department of Uludağ ünî varsity on two groups of students with 20 students in each group. These groups became interchangably the experimental and the control group during four weeks of time. The experimental group was exposed to the sample reading passages as a pre-translation activity while the control group was not. With the experimental group four texts from four different forms of "narrative type" -tale, short story, article, anecdote- were studied before they were asked to translate Turkish texts of the same forms to English. Both groups were asked to translate the same Turkish texts to -English. Their translations were evaluated by two different teachers for the sake of accuracy and reliability, one is a native English speaker and the other is a Turkish teacher of English. The students' translations were evaluated over a hundred according to five criteria: grammar, lexical items,syntax, style and pragmatic items. The t-test was applied to the results. However, the hypothesis has failed because of group-oriented factors and a limited time.

Bu araştırma üniversite öğrencilerinin Türkçe'den İngilizce'ye yaptıkları çevirilerin daha doğal ve İngilizce'ye uygun olmasını sağlamak için, çeviri öncesinde öğrencilere verilecek İngilizce örnek metinlerle öğrencileri İngilizce'deki metin türlerinden haberdar ederek en uygun ve en doğal şekilde çeviri yapabilme yeteneklerinin geliştirilip geliştirilemeyeceğini ortaya çıkarmak amacını gütmektedir. Araştırmaya 20şer kişilik iki grup katılmıştır. Bu gruplar sırayla ikişer kere hem deney, hem de kontrol grubu olmuşlardır. Deney grubuna çeviri metni verilmeden önce benzer İngilizce metinler okutulmuş, daha sonra her iki gruba da aynı çeviri sınavı verilmiştir. Güvenirliliği artırmak için öğrencilerin yaptıkları çeviriler üniversitede çalışan bir Türk diğeri İngiliz olan iki İngilizce öğretmeni tarafından değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuçlara testi uygulanmış ve hipotezin reddedildiği görülmüştür. Bunun en önemli nedenlerinden biri uygulama süresinin kısalığıdır. Çeviri alışkanlıklarının yerleşmesi için daha uzun zamana ihtiyaç olmasından dolayı bir aylık bir zaman öğrenci çevirilerindeki farklılaşmayı ölçmek için yeterli süre olarak gözükmemektedir. Süre, eğer, daha uzun mesela bir dönem veya 1 sene olarak kullanılırsa daha başarılı olunacaktır. Ayrıca, deneye katılan öğrencilerin bunu kendi istekleriyle yapmamı solmaları da motivasyonu azaltan bir faktör olmuştur.
