The secularization theory has been one of the most important subjects of Sociology of Religion and it is still a vital issue today. This study provides a scientific and conceptual background of the secularization theory which is traced back to the Renaissance, Reformation and even to the Old Testament. The study presents ideas of the founding fathers of sociology who prepared the ground for the secularization theory. In this respect, it emphasizes the approaches and ideas of Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. The first chapter of this thesis provides a summary of the emergence of the secularization theory and the arguments that support the theory. The first proponents of the secularization theory, who acted in what is also known as the classical period, believed in a direct positive relationship between modernization and secularization. As a result, they argued that religion will lose its importance in social life and even that the religion will disappear altogether. The first chapter also presents the counter-thesis which emerged after the classical period and the alternative approach. A central aim of the study is to focus on the works of a prominent sociologist of religion, David Martin, who raised the first critique of the theory in the classical period and dedicated his life to the study of the secularization issue. The second chapter of this thesis is devoted to David Martin?s ideas and approach. |
